Three new entries this week: Malibu by Miley Cyrus, Pretty Girl by Maggie Lindemann and Rollin' by Calvin Harris, Future & Khalid.
When I found out I would be reviewing a record by Miley Cyrus, I was expecting an explicit, drug-fuelled romper, something between We Can't Stop and Feelin' Myself. What a surprise it was, then, that Cyrus' new record, Malibu (which sits at #11), turned out to be a melancholic, meandering mass of country which she sprawls all over like a spider on cannabis. It's hardly the most streamable of records (you do get fed up of it fairly quickly) and I suspect that it's only reached #11 due to anticipatory purchases, but as a press release, it does its job.
Gawd, awful! At #21 is Maggie's Lindemann's Pretty Girl, and it's the sort of explicit, Auto-Tuned, momentous soliloquy, vivaciously delivered and vehemently reasoned, that you might expect off a ten-a-penny fast food worker who'd just managed to burn a McFlurry. (You may laugh, but I've seen it done…)
Just making it into our listings at #44 is Rollin' by Calvin Harris ft. Future & Khalid, and it continues Calvin Harris' trend of releasing ridiculously rich synth-fests, musical treacle if you like, for his featured artists to swim in; some tread water, like Khalid, whilst some, like Future, can be heard performing breaststrokes. It has its moments, but I've better from all involved. (Hell, I've heard better from Harris this year.)
